February 25, 2016
The North Adams Public Arts Commission held a public meeting on February 25, 2016 at City Hall’s law library, 10 Main Street, North Adams.
Erica Manville, Chairperson
Cynthia Quiñones, Secretary
Gail Kolis Sellers
William C. Blackmer, Jr.
Julia Dixon, Vice Chairperson
Also Present: Tammy Daniels
CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Manville called the meeting to order at 4:03p.m.
READING OF THE MINUTES
After discussion of the minutes, Manville recommended we note that at the previous meeting Sellers proposed the shortening and simplifying of the artist application process in order to make it more welcoming to a wider range of artists. Not all who might apply are prepared with a CV, or other samples of work, and our aim, she noted, is to be inclusive, while still gathering the information necessary to make decisions that reflect our purpose statement.
Following this addition, Ziter moved to accept the Public Arts Commission minutes from its February 4, 2016 public meeting. Sellers seconded. All voted in favor. None opposed.
CREATION OF THE PAC VISION STATEMENT (FOR THE WEBSITE)
In the absence of Kerns, a leader on this activity, the group agreed to postpone further discussion until the following meeting.
ARTS IN THE VISION 20/30 PLAN
In the absence of Dixon, who researched and planned to present on this topic, the group agreed to postpone this item until the following meeting.
ESTABLISHMENT OF A PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATIONS
Members continued to discuss the application draft provided by Ziter. Sellers reiterated her concerns about the length and detail of the draft, recommending that we simplify the form in order to be more user-friendly to a wider range of potential applicants.
The group discussed potential changes, including combining some items, moving the PAC purpose statement and core principles to the top of the document, adding formatting and naming conventions, and including recently established website and contact information for the PAC. Manville volunteered to make the necessary amendments and bring back a revised application for voting and further discussion as needed at the next meeting.
MEMBER CONCERNS/FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Members discussed the eventual creation of a list of sites where public art might be developed in the future.
Future agenda items will include the creation of the PAC Vision Statement (for the website), the role of the arts in the Vision 20/30 Plan, and further review of the artist application process.
The next meeting of the Public Arts Commission will occur on March 17 at 4:00p.m. at the Law Library meeting room in City Hall.
With no other business to discuss, Ziter moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:03p.m. Quiñones seconded. All voted in favor. None opposed.
